Enterprise Architecture (EA) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Should not be at War

In many organizations the SOA and EA teams are in a state of conflict. This is a function of the difference in their focus – SOA developers are focused on meeting the immediate needs of the business, while enterprise architects are focused on the longer term strategic goals. SOA developers see enterprise architects as the representatives of the dreaded "Big Design Up Front" (BDUF) camp, while they are the vanguards of the lightweight, just-in-time "Ya Ain't Gonna Need It" (YAGNI) camp. In this worldview, architects want to spend all their time overdesigning solutions to every problem – taking too long and hampering the creativity and agility of application development teams who need to respond quickly to actual business needs. But this conflict keeps enterprises from enjoying the very real benefits of SOA – reduced time to market, increased agility and reuse, and (over time) reduced cost. Both sides have something valuable to contribute to the effort, and each side needs to recognize the strengths and contribution of the other. This presentation discusses how both teams can create value by working together.

Bard Papegaaij

Bard Papegaaij is Research Director for Enterprise Architecture with Gartner Australia. He focuses on the strategic development of EA to meet the increasingly complex demands of the modern, hyperconnected business world. He is interested in the personal characteristics of successful enterprise architects and how to select for and stimulate the development of those characteristics in EA professionals. Another interest is EA in government: what is different from EA in business and what is the same; how to measure success when the bottom line is not purely financial; and how to deal with the tension between political and bureaucratic agendas. Bard has more than 25 years of experience in the IT industry in a variety of roles and projects, ranging from AI research and software engineering to EA and interim IT management.
